"The great sea battle off the west coast of Denmark on 31 May 1916 lasted little more than twelve hours. But the naval race between Britain and Ger-many that led up to it occupied six-teen intensive years of preparation.

No less than 250 ships engaged at Jutland. On this clash between the most monstrous floating armaments ever forged, the destiny of nations was expected to hang. Yet despite the fierce actions, splendid seamanship and matchless valour that marked them, those few thunderous hours in the mist and darkness of the North Sea left only a sense of frustration and dis-appointment. First reports suggested that the outcome was a British disaster; the personalities of the admirals, and the tactics they had used, became the subject of prolonged and violent controversy; and Jutland itself was called 'the battle that was never fought out'. But because of the unsuspected qualities and defects it revealed in the naval skill and national vigour of both sides, it can be seen now as one of the decisive battles of modern times.

The story of Jutland is told here by the men who were present on the bridges, in the fighting-tops and gun-turrets and engine-rooms of the British and German fleets. Their words vividly recreate the fury of those crucial hours.

Stuart Legg is a professional editor of documentary films, and in this book, as in Trafalgar, he has applied his experience as an editor of visual material to a literary narrative which is at once dramatic and authentic.
