A vintage 1945 very good hardcover copy of SPHERICAL TRIGONOMETRY FOR NAVIGATORS by CHARLES WILLIAMS

PREFACE

This book sets out to explain as simply and clearly as preparation two special aims have been kept in view possible the principles of spherical trigonometry. In its preparation two special aims have been kept in view.

The first is to make as easy as possible the understanding of solid geometrical figures, which can only be represented in perspective on the printed page. For this purpose, in the early chapters, the method of drawing Hat diagrams which can then be folded has been adopted as an aid to the imagination.

The second special aim has been to give the student every possible help in remembering the formulae, or in remembering how they may be reconstructed when required.

Worked examples showing the application of spherical trigonometry to navigational problems are given at each stage, and sufficient exercises have been included to enable the reader to test his grasp of each chapter.

Tables of the values of trigonometrical functions used in the exercises have been included so that they can be worked even if mathematical tables are not available. If, however, the student has access to a full set of tables, it will be advantageous to use them rather than the extracts here given, as familiarity with the tables is an important part of practical trigonometrical work.

The standard of accuracy adopted is that of accuracy to the nearest minute of arc. Greater accuracy when necessary is easily obtained by using six or seven-figure tables instead of five, but to introduce it here would unnecessarily complicate the examples, in which clearness of principle is more important than very close results. On the other hand, any lower standard would be unsatisfactory, even for a beginning, and for this reason the use of four-figure tables is not recommended.
