METEOROLOGY FOR AVIATORS by R. C. SUTCLIFFE - Hardback - 1948
A acceptable hardcover used copy of METEOROLOGY FOR AVIATORS by R. C. SUTCLIFFE.
"PREFACE
The aim of the present volume is to present in a compact form such aspects of meteorology as are important in aviation. There are at present available a number of publications which cover, in whole or in part, the general field of meteorology, and the enthusiast will have no difficulty in obtaining material for extensive reading. The immediate need is rather to cater for the pilot of average keenness who wishes to make himself sufficiently a master of the subject for success and efficiency in his profession, but has neither the time nor always the inclination to sturly the whole literature of meteorological science, and may not have the basic scientific training necessary to follow the presentation in the more technical publications. The information which is of interest to the aviator is, furthermore, scattered through a number of publications where the emphasis is scientific rather than aeronautical, and there is a long-felt want for a textbook which covers the necessary field with the proper perspective.
The general scope of this volume is broadly that covered by the present syllabuses for First and Second Class Civil Air Navigators' Licences and the parallel training courses of the Royal Air Force. The primary object has been to produce a suitable textbook for the courses, but no attempt has been made to provide simply the information which is both necessary and sufficient for the examina-tions. Although the treatment is mainly descriptive and qualitative and mathematical formulae have been avoided as far as possible, in some sections theoretical discussions are elaborated to a stage beyond that which it is anticipated the candidate will be called upon to reproduce. In other sections, as for example in the study of synoptic charts and forecasting, it is impossible to do more than indicate the main points, and to provide a basis upon which the pilot may build up a sound knowledge, by experience and by familiarity with the weather maps which he has the opportunity of examining at a large number of aerodromes, at home and abroad.
A special effort has been made to achieve a logical develop-ment of the subject. The presentation begins with an outline of the organization which has been evolved in order to meet the meteorological requirements of the aviator-it is of first importance that the pilot should know what information is available and how it may be obtained in practice. Following this is a discussion of the methods of observation, instruments and units in use, which leads naturally to the use of codes and the conventional methods of representing the data on synoptic charts. A short chapter only is devoted to these questions in the body of the book."
The spine has a fair bit of damage but the pages are intact.
